This year Apple launched its iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 Mini series on 13th October 2020; all iPhones from the 12 series are now available in Nepal. iPhone 12 mini has been a good book for most people like it the smallest and the cheapest of all in the series.
The official starting price of the iPhone 12 mini in Nepal was NPR 118,000 for 64GB. But, the new price of iPhone 12 Mini in Nepal is NPR 112,900, NPR 120,900, and NPR 136,900 for the 64GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB, respectively.
iPhone 12 Mini Overview
Beating Apple in its innovation and design is not everyone’s cup of tea. With each launch, the brand has been improving in its minor to a significant part. This Apple iPhone has an A14 Bionic chip, the first chip built on a 5-nanometer process in the smartphone industry to improve performance and efficiency. According to apple, 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU in the A14 are 50% faster than the fastest competing smartphone chips.
Design and built Quality
iPhone 12 mini can be best described as the compact version of iPhone 12 with 5.18 inches height, 2.53 inches width, 0.29-inch depth, and 4.76 ounces (135 grams) weight, surprisingly small light for a flagship phone. Moreover, it also brings back the memory of the iPhone 5, a comfortable fit in a tiny pocket with a good grip.
It has a 5.4 inches OLED super retina XDR display screen of extended 1080 resolution and an IP68-rated glass body with a ceramic shield, which can hold 30 minutes of water resistivity in the depth of 6 meters maximum.
It is a typical glass-sandwich smartphone with tempers glass panels and an aluminum frame. The video neither is the audio is compromised in the iPhone 12 mini as the same spatial audio playback that supports Dolby Atmos, and HDR with Dolby vision is found in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 pro.
On the phone’s backside, the house for the primary camera and ultrawide camera along with the dual-LED flash is placed at the top-left corner. The volume key and the silencer are placed on the left along with the SIM slot, and the power key is placed on the right side. The bottom part consists of the mouthpiece and the lightning port, followed by the second stereo speaker.
Performance
Every iPhone 12 series has iOS 14.1 preinstalled, but iOS 14.2, which is the minor update of iOS 14.1 with the bug fixes, will be waiting for you. As mentioned earlier, the iPhone 12 mini has a super retina XDR OLED screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz, which is quite disappointing as the Oneplus series has already acquired a 120Hz refresh rate.
A system-wide Dark Mode is also available, which we can enable manually from the display setting. The Dark mode affects all system apps. The option to darken the home screen wallpaper is also available while you are already in the dark mode.
The Apple A14 Bionic is a 64-bit ARM-based system on a Chip. Apple claims that the CPU performs up to 40 % faster, and the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is up to 30% faster than A12. A 16-core neural engine and new machine learning matrix accelerators are also included to perform twice and ten times as quickly.
Camera
If you compare the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in terms of camera, you would be surprised to see no differences. Both the phones have two 12MP snappers as the primary camera at the back and a 12MP selfie camera.
The back camera is an ultra-wide and wide camera with up to 2x optical zoom out and up to 5x digital zoom. Portrait mode lighting is provided with six effects. Panorama of up to 63MP is available. Also, the night mode and deep fusion mode have added some extra specialty due to the use of the A14 chip. Other options are; wide color capture for photos, lens correction, red-eye correction, auto image stabilization, burst mode, and photo geotagging. The image formats are HEIF and JPEG.
The primary cameras provide smart photographs; however, imperfection begins to pile up when zooming to 100%. On the other hand, the photos with well-balanced exposure can be seen by handling the noise correctly due to Smart HDR.
The selfie camera’s photos are awe-inspiring with every detail, color, and handling the noise. The portrait and the night mode are also present in the selfie camera, though the night mode is not fair.
iPhone 12 series are the first to have HDR video recording with Dolby vision of up to 30 fps. The cinematic video stabilization has made the phone even better. Similarly, the time-lapse is present in night mode too. You can take continuous autofocus video and take 8MP still photos while recording videos. The videos are recorded in HEVC and H.264 formats.
Battery
The battery life of the iPhone has always been the talk of the town. With iPhone 12 mini, you get video playback of up to 15 hours and audio of up to 50 hours. It has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W and MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W can be used. Charging can be done through either USB to computer or power adapter. Fast-charging of up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher, sold separately, can be used.
