Samsung has been innovating new technologies for a long time. Last year the company had launched the foldable Galaxy Fold smartphone but failed miserably. Later, it came with refined versions: Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip. This year, the news has been confirmed that Samsung will counter its competitors like TCP, LG, and Oppo by launching the Rollable and Sliding screens to the game.
Samsung Rollable and Sliding smartphones
During the earnings call, Samsung Display’s Senior Vice President Kwon-Young Choi confirmed that the company would be strengthening its display presence through innovative form factors such as rollable and sliding displays. They believe the new technology will uplift their brand into foldable technology.
However, there’s no guarantee whether the company’s rolling and sliding screens would be for their smartphones or for other devices. But in 2019, the company had filed a patent for a rollable phone similar to that of Oppo and LG concepts.
Likewise, in the same year, the Korean giant has also filed a patent for sliding displays inspired by the Oppo that has already shown some of its concepts before. Particularly, the patent 2019 shows that the screen slides down, disclosing the selfie cameras and other sensors at the top.
The official photos have not been revealed yet. However, LetsGoDigital has rendered some of the photos based on the patent’s descriptions.
On a similar note, LG also exhibited its first rollable phone at CES earlier this month. However, TCL first shared the new technology, ‘ Rolling and Sliding screens.’ Similarly, the other brand Oppo has also shared its working prototype in 2021.
What Samsung offers for now?
As for now, similar to the rolling and sliding technology, Samsung has foldable technology in their smartphones. With two different form factors- Fold (Galaxy Fold, Galaxy X Fold 2) and Flip (Galaxy Z Flip), Samsung is already leading in the business. With the addition of new technology, the users will have more options to choose from.
What other trends on display can we see in 2021?
The Samsung company had already announced that they would stop producing the LCD panels for the phones. However, acknowledging the clients’ request, Samsung will still be producing the LCD panels for them.
Moreover, this year Samsung will focus on promoting the OLED panels. The panels will not only be limited to smartphones. They will be adding the panels to the laptops and notebooks as well.
