If you want to buy a low budget smartphone, Redmi 8A can be one option you can consider. With features like mammoth battery capacity, splash-proof display to ensure enhanced protection, multitasking of 2 to 3 light apps, acceptable gaming performance, and face unlock, the phone is awe-striking. The phone is an upgrade made to the Redmi 8 with some modifications and new features.
Design and Build Quality
A 6.2-inch dot notch IPS HD+ display has an aspect ratio of 19:9. The phone has a tiny notch at the top to house the selfie camera, while there is a bezel at the bottom, giving the branding to Redmi. Gorilla Glass 5 protects from accidental falls, and P2i Nano-coating ensures protection against accidental spills. The touch response of the phone is outstanding. The phone weighs 188 grams.
The phone has a power lock and volume rocker on the right, while the left side has a SIM tray with triple slots. Similarly, on the top is a secondary microphone, while on the bottom, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB C-port, and a speaker grille.
The back has a polycarbonate body giving an excellent grip to the hand. A single-camera with an LED flash is placed just above the Redmi branding. Available color variants are Midnight Black, Ocean Blue, and Sunset Red.
Performance
Redmi 8A Dual is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset, a downgrade from Redmi 7 that already has Snapdragon 632. Following this, the phone has an Octa-core processor of 1.95GHz, Quad-core, Cortex A53. It has two RAM variants, i.e., either 2GB or 3GB, and internal storage of either 32GB or 64GB.
The 64GB internal storage comes with only 3GB RAM, while the 32GB internal storage comes with 2GB and 3GB RAM. The memory is expandable up to 512GB via a microSD card. The GPU is Adreno 505.
The phone runs MIUI 11 on top of Android 9.0. The use of MIUI 11 makes the icon and notification panel look more minimalistic. Multitasking of the 2-3 lighter apps is achievable, while the heavy apps will take some time. The gaming is not bad either. You don’t have a fingerprint sensor, but the face unlocks, which is also quite fast.
Camera
The Redmi 8A dual has a dual-camera setup at the back. The primary camera of 13MP is a SONY IMX 363 with an aperture of f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.12-micron. Similarly, the second 2MP camera has an aperture of f/2.4 and a pixel size of 1.75-micron.
The image quality for the budget you are spending is satisfactory. But looking at the bright side of the phone, images captured in a good light is surprisingly better. Portrait photos are also satisfactory under the good light. However, HDR takes some time to process the image, and the camera struggles to lock the focus.
The selfie on the front is 8MP with an aperture of f/2.0 and a pixel size of 1.12-micron.
Video at 1080p @30fps is recordable from both front and back cameras.

A 5000mAh battery is equipped with proprietary fast charging functionality. You have a Type C port for charging while the charger of 10W comes with the phone.
